Mercedes-Benz Atego Helps Logic Transport Trailers, Implements & Accessories

When it comes to transporting the trailers and implements Logic designs for use with ATVs, UTVs, and tractors, load volume is typically more important than weight. The Northumberland firm previously selected the Mercedes-Benz light- and medium-duty distribution Atego for this role and has returned to the range with its latest purchase. This new Atego is bigger and more powerful than the last, moving from the 5.1-litre, 210-horsepower (155-kilowatt) engine on the old 1221 model to a 1224 variant with a 7.7-litre, 238-HP (175-kW) engine. The platform body, meanwhile offers a front bulkhead and pulls a twin-axle drawbar trailer.

“The drawbar trailer was also built for us by Wheelbase Engineering four years ago, to work with our first Mercedes-Benz Atego,” says Logic Managing Director Simon Beniams. “Like the truck, the trailer has a 7-metre bed, so it’s a lot bigger than the version we were using previously. It’s proved very successful.”

    Supporting The Dealer Network

The Atego is based at Logic’s headquarters in Hexham, where it moves the equipment and components from the main manufacturing facility to sellers and suppliers in its dealer network.

“Although strong and durable, our own trailers, implements, and accessories are relatively light, which means we rarely get close to the 22-tonne gross train weight limit,” Beniams says. “We do make full use of the available space, though, and have even built a frame for the truck body, which takes us close to the maximum permissible 5.03 m (16.5 ft) height.” The platform body also features additional load lashing points on the side to more easily secure Logic’s products during transport.

    Designed For Distribution

The Atego range includes models with gross vehicle weights (GVWs) ranging from 7.5 to 16 tonnes (8.3 to 17.6 U.S. tons) with four cab options from which to choose. Many of the specifications on Logic’s new Atego were selected with driver Les Fowler’s preferences in mind.

“I value Les’ opinion highly, so involved him in the vehicle specification process,” says Beniams. “It was at his suggestion that we agreed to go with the bigger engine, which is giving him a bit more power on the inclines, as well as the longer-range fuel tank. All told, it really is quite a machine.”
