Multimodal Logistics, a container haulage operator with headquarters near The Port of Felixstowe in Suffolk, has added five new Renault Trucks T480 High Turbo Compound 6x2 tractor units to its fleet, now totalling 56 vehicles. Potential fuel savings and driver appeal guided the selection of the trucks, which are Multimodal Logistics’ first T480 Highs.

    Drawing Comparisons

Multimodal Logistics says it selected the trucks to gauge their performance against a competitor’s model in its fleet, which has doubled since 2019 thanks to substantial company growth.

“The vehicles are hitting their targets and performing well on fuel, achieving in excess of 11 mpg, which is in the top end of fuel figures for the fleet,” says Managing Director Tim Wray.

    Achieving Fuel Savings

Multimodal Logistics is using the trucks to distribute containers across the UK. The vehicles’ DE13 TC engines, rated for 480 horsepower (358 kilowatts), use Turbo Compound engine technology, which provides increased torque to enhance engine responsiveness. Renault says the technology can provide up to 10% fuel savings and 10% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

Renault pairs the engine with the Optidriver AT gearbox with an automatic clutch for 30% quicker and smoother shifts. Technologies such as Smart Torque Control, the Optivision Map Based system, Fuel ECO, and ECO Cruise control with Optiroll also help boost fuel savings. Optivision uses topographical data that an onboard computer uses to optimise gear shift, acceleration, and speed strategies prior to inclines and declines.

    Delighting Drivers

Multimodal Logistics specified its T480 Highs with an eye toward driver comfort. In addition to their heated, ventilated, and air-suspended luxury driver seats, the trucks boast “ultimate” leather steering wheels and come equipped with a microwave, lockers, and a memory foam mattress topper.

“We selected the T480 High TC for its driver appeal,” says Wray. “The drivers are out all week tramping, and we wanted a high-specification vehicle with all the creature comforts. The T-High cab fits the bill perfectly and provides a roomy working and living space.”
